Challenging and Antisocial Behaviour

As well as working with individuals to support and empower them to better manage the deficits of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and various degrees of the Autistic Spectrum, Brighter Futures principal Danny Biscombe has also worked with offenders on behalf of Devon & Cornwall Police.

Conditional Cautioning

A Conditional Caution is a statutory development of the non-statutory police caution ('simple caution') which has long been available, at the discretion of the police and CPS, as an alternative to prosecution in suitable cases. The basic criteria for a Conditional Caution - ie those which must be satisfied before this disposal can be considered - are:

  • that the offender is 18 or over
  • that the offender admits the offence to the authorised person; and
  • that there is, in the opinion of the relevant prosecutor, evidence sufficient to charge the offender with the offence

Danny has worked with many male and female offenders causing antisocial behaviour and many have committed violence against a person. Conditional Cautioning has allowed offenders to choose to accept a caution on condition that they attend anger management sessions.

As well as motivating the client to accept full responsibility for their actions and delivering the behaviour modification element of the work to address the offending, we also look at reparation (making ammends to the victim where possible) and developing an empathic understanding of the effects of their abusive and offending behaviour on the victim. We also look at how their offending behaviour impacts on their own lives as well as those around them such as family and friends and the possible consequences of not addressing their behaviour and the positive opportunities which can develop for them if they choose to change. There may also be a need to address alcohol and/or drug use and we can help to link-up specialist support services with a multi-agency approach to acheiving a successful outcome to the intervention. Finally, we look at what needs to change, how that can best be acheived and setting goals for the future and developing an action plan to enable clients to move forward with their lives and work towards establishing a more positive, inclusive, optimistic and respectful place in their communities and society as a whole.

Community Based Programmes

Danny has also been involved in the planning of the delivery of anger management and domestic violence work in prison and the continuance of the work for offenders who were released before they completed the programmes, in community based programmes on release from prison.
